Meet The Grower

Meet The Grower

Pupils in Lewisham had the opportunity to see where their food comes from by attending a one day Meet the Grower event. Taking place at the Jubilee sports ground in Catford, eight schools attended from the Lewisham and Chartwells school contract.

In the ‘Growing zone’ pupils learned how to plant seeds and each class went home with a portable greenhouse to plant their seeds back at their schools.

In the ‘Exercise zone’ pupils met and trained with Paralymian Ben Quilter. Ben competed at the 2012 London Olympics where he won a bronze medal in judo. With a bachelors degree in sport and exercise Ben is very big on nutrition and put the pupils through a range of exercise before showing them his medals and talking about the commitment needed to overcome challenges and become a winner.

In the ‘Eating zone’ pupils were welcomed by a couple of our suppliers and enjoyed fun presentations and product displays including apple tasting. They were also shown by Yew tree dairy farms how milk was produced on their family farms.

In the ‘Cooking zone’ pupils met with our own Fun into food team, members of Lewisham public health and member from the Soil association. Everyone rolled up their sleeves to shouts of ‘Yes Chef’ and made their own fresh pizza’s before having them baked in a wood burning oven and eating them for lunch.

We are planning our next event for June and will hold a second day to invite all head teachers, governors and teachers from schools to a nutrition session and walk in event where we will be available to answer concerns over UFSM.
