Project Fuel

Project Fuel is a mentoring programme aimed at inspiring young adults to get the most out of their Secondary education with the underlying theme of fuelling your body and mind to make the right choices and achieve success.
The idea was developed from secondary student feedback gained while they were on work experience with Chartwells in Lewisham and Iain Paish, Deputy Headteacher, Deptford Green School.bubbleFUEL
The first programme was delivered at Deptford Green school in September 2013 by Ben Quilter (Bsc, MSc) Paralympic, World and European Judo medal winner and Amy Roberts (BSc hons RPHNutr) Chartwells Senior Nutritionist and included –

• Mentoring, goal setting and performance profiling relating to Ben’s time as an athlete and his exercise science background.
• Food for fuel, basic physiology, food choices, portion control, energy in and energy out, brain fuel and function, sugar and fat contents.
With support from the school, we spent a week delivering interactive assemblies, targeted mentoring workshops and having lunch with the students.

The targeted workshops involved the whole of year 9, 240 students, taking 8 double lesson periods with Ben and Amy. Using professional analytical tools and work books the aim was to assist the students with identifying their future goals making the right choice when taking their options.
Feedback from the project has been very positive with over 95% of students indicating that the knowledge and skills learnt from the workshop would be helpful in making the right decision for their futures.
