Bright Start Bright Breakfast

On the 7th November 2013 at Kelvin Grove school we launched the Bright start breakfast initiative. The Mayor Sir Steve Bullock was in attendance and enjoyed a wholesome bowl of porridge with the children and shared some of his experiences of eating porridge as a youngster.

It has been well documented that there is a rising issue of food poverty with an estimated 2.5 children per class coming to school hungry.

The team came up with the idea during the summer break when we were trying to decide on how we can support the local community. After a number of ideas we felt that this was the best way to ensure that children are afforded a free and nutritious breakfast.
During our visit to Malawi we have seen how crucial breakfast is to children. Working closely with our nutrition team we wanted to support schools and children to kick start their day with a nutritious slow energy release breakfast.

We understand not every school will be able to participate at breakfast and have therefore given to offer during break time or alternatively should the school already run a breakfast club that we supply porridge and the dry ingredients for this.

Rathfern primary school currently serve over 200 children each day on this initiative and many other schools have seen a good uptake of the offer.
